This is being written quickly as a first draft to share a little about my excitement with this endeavor…
After working with and learning from a much-loved and well-respected Ayurvedic doctor and teacher from India, I have long imagined eventually contributing and passing on any amount of knowledge somehow in my own little way.
Time passed and a major life change occurred requiring me to drop everything to care for my mother in her final days after her becoming wheelchair-bound with dementia and other life-threatening ailments.
Months were spent in various ERs, ICUs, PCUs, rehab units, etc. Three separate medical doctors all said mom’s end was coming very soon so I decided to make her final days as comfortable and dignified as possible since she sacrificed so much to raise my sister and me. As an immigrant with limited English, mom cleaned houses as a maid, ironed people’s clothes, worked in a church nursery, sold Avon and more, yet still found time for things such as volunteering for PTA! So with her in a very fragile medical condition being cared for by a team of medical professionals but benefits coming to an end, I made the bold decision to take mom home and attempt to care for her myself in her final days or hours. People thought I was crazy and I simply said I would like to at least try “a few days” and that I would admit her to a facility if I could not do it.
Well, mom’s final days stretched into years (over three years so far!) which have been the most difficult…yet most meaningful of my life because I have accomplished my original goal of helping give her some really beautiful days and moments in her own home. The challenge has had ups and many downs which absolutely tested my health and sanity. The experience has taught me so much and made me more fully appreciate Ayurveda and all forms of healing and wellness that have helped my mother and me both survive this challenge: first and foremost God, along with rest, breathing, yoga/stretching, walking and exercising in nature, scents, tastes, sounds, water, nutrition, meditation, prayer, love, forgiveness, laughter, patience, empathy, compassion, understanding, connection, learning, spiritual growth, creativity and more.
While meditating and praying one morning recently, the name and idea “Amorveda” beautifully came to me as as the vehicle for my desire and duty to share lessons learned.
The vision continued and essentially wrote itself. This site and whatever comes from it aims to be inclusive of all forms of healing and integrative health. Thank you for reading, I welcome your thoughts. More to come soon…
